Berks County Community Foundation

The building is a 12,000 square foot, three-story office and community facility on the corner of Third and Court Streets in Reading.   

The first floor houses a state-of-the-art community conference center, reception space in the main lobby, a flexible meeting room for up to 75 people, kitchen, a 30-seat board room and a “fireside room.”  Offices for the Foundation are located on the second floor along with small meeting rooms.  The third floor and the garden level are available for tenant space or future expansion.  

The building is a LEED Platinum certified building which demonstrates easily replicable, economically defensible green building strategies that will protect the local environment.  Green features of this building include a 5,000-gallon cistern in the basement to store rainwater for flushing toilets (estimated to cut water bills 80%); floor-to-ceiling porous tubing to heat and cool the building more efficiently; a planted roof to aid in cooling; and most of the building faces south for natural daylight.  Some materials in the building are recycled including wooden stairs reclaimed from boardwalks at Coney Island, N.Y. and countertops made from recycled glass chips and shredded U.S. currency.

The project was performed as a joint venture with Berkey Construction Co.
